Best European Cities With Beaches You Can Walk To

By Published 2026-05-28Reviewed 2026-05-288 min read

City + walkable beach is rarer than expected in Europe. Here's the honest sort.

Tier 1 — beach at the door

  • Barcelona Barceloneta: Beach 5 min walk from old town.
  • Nice Promenade des Anglais: Pebble beach along the city centre.
  • San Sebastián: La Concha is the city beach.
  • Tel Aviv (technically not Europe): The model.
  • Reykjavík (in summer): Nauthólsvík geothermal beach.

Tier 2 — beach in 10-15 min by tram/metro

  • Lisbon (with tram to Cascais 30 min): Estoril/Cascais beaches.
  • Valencia: Malvarrosa beach 15 min by metro.
  • The Hague Scheveningen: 15 min by tram.
  • Athens Glyfada / Vouliagmeni: 30 min by tram.
  • Stockholm Smedsuddsbadet: 15 min by tram or walking.

Tier 3 — short ferry/train

  • Copenhagen Amager Strand: 15 min by metro.
  • Helsinki + Suomenlinna: Ferry to swim spots.
  • Nordic capitals: Bath suits to lake/sea cold-swim spots.

What disappoints

  • Most "beach near Marseille": Often 30+ min outside city.
  • Lisbon's main beaches: 30+ min by train; not in-city.
  • Naples Mappatella: Urban-bay swimming, not the beach trip.

Strategy

For beach-city combo, pick coast cities where the beach is integral (Barcelona, Nice, San Sebastián). For inland cities + beach, plan for 2-3 days at the beach as a separate part of the trip.
