The Baltic loop is among Europe's most underrated itineraries — three UNESCO old towns at half Western European prices, dense in 7-10 days.
Best 7-day Baltic loop
- Day 1-2: Tallinn (UNESCO Old Town + design quarter)
- Day 3-4: Riga (Old Town + Art Nouveau)
- Day 5-7: Vilnius (largest baroque centre + Užupis)
Direction matters: most travelers fly into Tallinn (FinnAir, Ryanair from Helsinki), exit Vilnius. Reverse works equally well.
10-day Baltic loop (with day-trips)
- Day 1-3: Tallinn + day-trip to Lahemaa National Park
- Day 4-6: Riga + day-trip to Jurmala beach + Sigulda castles
- Day 7-10: Vilnius + day-trip to Trakai (water castle)
Transport between cities
- Tallinn → Riga: 4h 30min by bus (Lux Express). Trains don't run between countries.
- Riga → Vilnius: 4h 30min by bus.
- Tallinn → Vilnius direct: 9h. Better to break in Riga.
- Tallinn-Helsinki ferry: 2h. Excellent connection — Tallinn is a popular Helsinki day-trip.
Cost reality
Baltic capitals run €70-€140/night for decent product. Restaurants €15-€30 for full dinners. The whole loop costs roughly half of comparable Western European trips.
Best season
- May-September: Long days, festivals, all attractions open. Peak.
- December (Christmas markets): Snow, atmospheric, magical. Cold.
- January-February: Brutally cold (-15°C common). Skip unless you want winter.
What to skip
- Adding Helsinki or St. Petersburg as part of the loop: Different tier of trip.
- Each capital in 1 night: Each deserves 2-3 nights minimum.
- Driving the loop yourself: Buses are faster and cheaper than rental cars.
