Art-trip lists are usually "Paris-Florence-Madrid" recycled. Here's the honest ranking by museum density and trip quality.
Tier 1 — destinations on their own
- Florence: Uffizi, Accademia, Bargello, Pitti Palace. Renaissance density unmatched. 3-4 nights minimum.
- Madrid: Prado, Reina Sofía, Thyssen — the "Golden Triangle" 5 min apart. The best art-trip city in Europe per kilometer.
- Paris: Louvre, Orsay, Pompidou, Rodin Museum, plus dozens of smaller. 5+ nights to scratch the surface.
- Rome: Vatican Museums, Capitoline, Borghese (book ahead), Palazzo Massimo. Often overlooked vs Florence — Roman art is exceptional.
- Amsterdam: Rijksmuseum + Van Gogh + Stedelijk in 200m of each other in Museumplein.
Tier 2 — strong art-trip secondaries
- Vienna: Belvedere (Klimt), Albertina, Kunsthistorisches, MAK. Excellent.
- Barcelona: Picasso Museum, MNAC, Fundació Joan Miró + the Modernisme architecture itself.
- Berlin: Museum Island (Pergamon, Neues, Alte Nationalgalerie), Hamburger Bahnhof.
- Munich: The three Pinakotheken cluster — best art on a per-museum basis in Germany.
- Venice: Accademia, Peggy Guggenheim, Punta della Dogana, Doge's Palace.
Tier 3 — surprising picks
- Bilbao: Guggenheim Bilbao plus the Bellas Artes is a genuinely strong combination.
- Saint Petersburg (note: politics): Hermitage if accessible.
- The Hague: Mauritshuis (Vermeer's Girl with a Pearl Earring) plus modern art.
- Basel: Kunstmuseum, Beyeler Foundation, Vitra Design Museum nearby.
Strategy
Buy timed tickets 2-3 months ahead for major museums (Uffizi, Vatican, Borghese, Van Gogh). Pace yourself — 2 museums per day is a maximum for retention.
