Why castle hotels
Two formats: full luxury castle hotels (€500–2,500/night, with chef restaurants, hot tubs, ghosts) and simpler converted-castle inns (€150–350/night, atmospheric but less polished). Both work — the difference is service level vs price tier.
Scotland
Inverlochy Castle (luxury, Fort William area), Glenapp Castle (luxury, Ayrshire), Drumlanrig Castle, Cromlix Hotel (Andy Murray's hotel near Stirling). £400–1,500/night. Edinburgh base for visits + Glasgow access.
Loire Valley (France)
Château de Pray (near Amboise), Château d'Artigny, Château de Beaulieu (Loches). €200–800/night. Each chateau hotel walking-distance to other château visits. Day-trip Loire from Tours base; or castle-hotel hop multi-night.
Bavaria and German Burghotels
Schloss Hotel Burg Schlitz (Mecklenburg), Burghotel Auf Schönburg (Rhine Valley), Schloss Elmau (Bavarian alpine luxury). €300–1,200/night. Multiple-castle networks (Schloss Hotels Germany).
Tuscany / Umbria
Castello Banfi (Brunello vineyard), Borgo San Felice, Castello di Velona, Castello del Nero. €400–1,500/night. Florence, Siena base for Tuscany; Perugia for Umbria.
Spain — Paradores
Paradores network — state-owned castle and convent hotels across Spain. Parador de Sigüenza (12th-century Moorish castle), Parador de León (16th-century convent). €120–350/night. Affordable castle-hotel access.
Portugal — Pousadas
Spanish-Portuguese parallel — convertedmonasteries and castles. Pousada de Évora (16th-century convent), Pousada de Estremoz (medieval castle). €150–400/night.
Ireland
Ashford Castle (Mayo), Dromoland Castle (Clare), Adare Manor (Limerick). €600–2,500/night. Ultra-luxury tier.
Strategy
Most castle hotels are rural — rental car required. Off-season (November-March) 30-50% rate drops + lower temperatures (medieval-castle heating limitations). Read our castle day trips companion for non-overnight visits.
