The European cigar map
European countries have generally easier import rules for Cuban cigars than the United States. Madrid is the European hub; Vienna preserves Habsburg-era tobacconist tradition; London has St James's gentleman-shop heritage. Below: where to buy and where to smoke.
Madrid
Madrid the European capital for Cuban cigars. La Casa del Habano (multiple flagships), Estanco Conde de Aranda. Habanos S.A. distribution centered in Spain. Singles €15–80; boxes €350–1,500. Lounges (cigar bars) at Hotel Wellington, Casino Gran Madrid.
Vienna
Vienna Tabak Trafiken — Habsburg-era licensed tobacconists, often with cigar selections. Tabak Trafik Cigar Lounge at Tabakmuseum (combined cigar shop + smoking lounge). €15–60 per cigar at top tier.
London
London James J. Fox (Saint James's Street, since 1787 — the cigar merchant). Davidoff London. Plus historic gentleman's clubs and hotel bars (Lanesborough, Connaught) with cigar lounges. £25–150 per cigar.
Geneva
Davidoff originated in Geneva. Davidoff flagship + Hotel des Bergues lounge. Swiss-luxury context. CHF 30–200 per cigar at premium tier.
Zurich
Zurich Sorel Hauptbahnhof, Zigarrenhaus Capi. Strong Swiss cigar-shop tradition.
Hamburg
Hamburg Pieper, Tabakhaus Cohrs. Hamburg's historical cigar trade preserves merchant tradition.
Smoking-rule considerations
Indoor smoking bans variable: Spain still allows in dedicated cigar bars; UK strict no-indoor; Austria still relaxed. Verify before booking lounge experience.
Strategy
Buy at licensed Habanos S.A. retailers — counterfeit Cubans common online. Customs returning to UK/USA tightly limited (UK: 200 cigarettes equivalent; USA: 100 cigars from Cuba post-2025 normalization rules vary). Storage requires humidor (60-70% humidity).
