City + coastal trail combos
Each route below has a city base — sleep in hotel, day-walk the coast, return for dinner. Multi-day point-to-point trails too (with luggage transfer) but city-base format more accessible for short trips.
La Spezia (Cinque Terre)
La Spezia base for Cinque Terre Sentiero Azzurro (Blue Path, 5km path linking 5 villages). €7.50 trail pass (or Cinque Terre Card). 4–6 hours full-route. Train between villages takes 5–10 min — walk one way, train back. Crowds heavy June–August.
Padstow / Falmouth (Cornwall)
Cornwall South West Coast Path — 1,014km total, day-segments accessible from Padstow, Falmouth, St. Ives. Free, well-marked. Highlights Bedruthan Steps, Pentire Point, Lizard Peninsula. Multi-day with B&B network.
Girona (Costa Brava)
Camí de Ronda — coastal path from French border to Blanes. Day-segments from Cadaqués, Tossa de Mar. Barcelona 1h drive. Less famous than Cinque Terre, less crowded. Mediterranean Catalan coast.
Dubrovnik
Dubrovnik wall walk (city walls, 2km, €35) + coastal walks toward Cavtat and Lokrum. Croatian Adriatic clear water. Spring (April-May) optimal.
Porto
Porto Senhora da Hora coastal walk + Foz do Douro promenade. Plus day-trip Caminho Português coastal route (Camino Santiago variant) starting Porto north. Atlantic spray and surf.
Nice
French Riviera Promenade des Anglais (city) + Cap Ferrat coastal path (day-trip Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat). Mediterranean limestone cliffs.
Lisbon
Lisbon Cabo da Roca and Sintra coast day-trips — westernmost point of mainland Europe. Atlantic-cliff dramatic. Reach by train + bus to Sintra then coastal walk back.
Strategy
Bring water, sun protection, proper hiking shoes (cobblestone-via-coast routes hostile to sneakers). Maritime weather changes fast — bring rain layer. Off-season (April-May, September-October) optimal. Read our hiking base companion.
