Lisbon fado vs Coimbra fado
Two fado traditions exist. Lisbon fado is the famous one — emotional, female-led, melancholic ballads about saudade (longing). Coimbra fado is exclusively male, student-tradition, performed in academic robes, less heart-wrenching, more elegant. Both worth experiencing.
Lisbon
Lisbon casa de fado (house of fado) tradition. Clube de Fado, A Severa, A Baiuca, Tasca do Chico. Most run dinner-and-show format €40–80. Plus fado vadio (amateur fado, no cover charge but tip generously, no dinner) at smaller bars. Alfama and Bairro Alto dense.
Alfama specifically
The original fado neighborhood. Mesa de Frades (former chapel, intimate setting), Casa de Linhares, Páteo de Alfama. Atmospheric medieval streets + fado the iconic Lisbon evening.
Coimbra
University city's fado de Coimbra — male-only tradition, students + alumni in black academic capes (capas). Different style: classical-guitar-led, less rending emotion, more Romantic-poetry. Performed at Casa de Fado of Coimbra and Fado ao Centro. Day-trip from Porto or Lisbon (2h train).
Porto
Porto fado scene smaller and less famous than Lisbon. O Fado at Casa do Fado (Ribeira). Authentic but not the headline attraction.
