The ferry-as-experience principle
Some city-island ferry rides are 90-minute scenic cruises included with €15 transit; others are 7-hour overnight passages. The cities below offer the former — and the second-tier islands the ferries reach are often as interesting as the famous ones.
Athens
Athens Piraeus port to Cyclades — Mykonos, Santorini, Naxos, Paros, Folegandros. Blue Star, SeaJets, Hellenic Seaways operate; €30–60 single. Mykonos and Santorini overcrowded summer; Naxos and Folegandros equivalents at lower prices and crowds. Day-trips to closer Saronic islands (Hydra, Aegina, Spetses) easier from Athens — €15–25.
Naples
Naples 30-minute ferries from Molo Beverello to Capri (€21), 75-min to Ischia (€18), 60-min to Procida (€15). Day-trip all three from Naples. Procida the underrated one.
Split
Split ferries to Hvar (1h–2h), Brač (50 min), Vis (2h30), Korčula (2h45). Krilo Jet faster passenger ferry; Jadrolinija slower car ferry. Day-trip Hvar or Brač from Split easily.
Stockholm
Stockholm archipelago — 30,000 islands. Waxholmsbolaget ferries to Vaxholm (1h), Sandhamn (3h), Grinda (1h45), Utö. SL transit pass covers some inner archipelago routes. Summer passenger boats only; winter limited service.
Helsinki
Helsinki archipelago + Suomenlinna fortress (15-minute ferry, transit-pass covered). Tallinn passenger ferries (2h, €25–50) make day-or-overnight cross-Baltic trips practical.
Lisbon
Lisbon ferries to Cacilhas, Almada, Trafaria. Lower-key but charming city-water moves. The Tagus ferries are commuter transit covered by Viva Viagem.
Strategy
Greek summer ferries sell out 1–2 weeks ahead Mykonos-Santorini route. Croatia much less booking pressure. Carry seasickness pills for Aegean wind days. Read our cruise stops guide for the cruise-ship companion angle.
