Tourist tablao vs authentic peña
Tablao = tourist-paid flamenco show (€30–80, with dinner often, polished but commercial). Peña = local flamenco club, members + serious aficionados, €5–15 cover, often open only late evenings, more authentic. The cities below have both.
Sevilla
Sevilla the global flamenco capital. Tablao Casa de la Memoria, Tablao El Arenal (touristy but authentic talent). For peña: Centro Cultural Flamenco la Cantera. Plus the Bienal de Flamenco festival every two years (next 2026). Santa Cruz base.
Jerez de la Frontera
Andalusian city — bullfighting and flamenco capital alongside Sevilla. Centro Andaluz de Flamenco (museum + library). Festival de Jerez (February-March, 17 days). Day-trip from Sevilla (1h train).
Granada
Granada Sacromonte gypsy caves — Cuevas Los Tarantos, Venta El Gallo. Cave-floor flamenco (zambra) the traditional Sacromonte form. €25–35 typical. Different style from Sevilla — more dance-and-music ensemble than singer-led.
Madrid
Madrid Corral de la Morería (the famous high-end), Casa Patas, Café de Chinitas. €40–80 with dinner. Strong commercial scene plus authentic peñas in Lavapiés.
Cordoba
Cordoba Tablao El Cardenal, Tablao Flamenco Cardenal in Judería Old Town. Smaller scale, more intimate. €25–35.
Barcelona
Barcelona Tablao Cordobés, Tablao Flamenco Nervión. Catalan-region flamenco performances less authentically Andalusian but technically excellent.
Strategy
Late-evening shows (10pm–midnight) more atmospheric than tourist 7pm slots. Reservations 2–4 weeks ahead summer. Peñas often unannounced — ask local flamenco aficionados or check Facebook events. Read our folk culture companion.
