What makes a derby trip
Two top-flight clubs in the same city playing twice a season — that's the baseline. Real derbies have decades-old rivalries, distinct fan bases, and the city becomes obviously divided in the days before.
Glasgow
Glasgow Celtic vs Rangers (Old Firm) is the world's most intense derby. Religious-class division historic; both teams played 4+ times a season due to small Scottish league. Tickets nearly impossible without local connection. Atmosphere unmatched.
Madrid
Madrid Real Madrid vs Atlético Madrid. Bernabéu and Metropolitano stadiums different parts of the city. Real-Atléti tickets €80–300 from clubs; secondary market 2–3x. Tier-2 derby El Clásico (Real-Barcelona) one of two annual fixtures.
Milan
Milan Inter vs AC Milan share San Siro stadium — same building, different home games. Derby della Madonnina. Tifo choreography spectacular. Tickets Curva Sud (Milan) and Curva Nord (Inter) hardcore; Tribuna Rossa (sides) safer for tourists.
Athens
Athens Olympiakos vs Panathinaikos = Derby of the Eternal Enemies. Truly volatile, occasionally violent. Karaiskakis (Olympiakos) safer experience; Panathinaikos plays at OAKA. Foreign visitors only neutral seating.
Istanbul
Istanbul Galatasaray-Fenerbahçe-Beşiktaş three-way rivalry. Istanbul derbies the loudest atmosphere in Europe per multiple players' accounts. Ticket logistics complicated for foreigners — go through tour operator.
Strategy
Buy through club official channels for tickets. Avoid scalpers. Know which end is home; never wear away colors. Trip duration 3–4 days minimum (match day + buffer). Read our stag party guide for the wider sports-trip companion.
