What grappa is
Italian brandy distilled from grape pomace (skins, seeds, stems left after winemaking). Made all over Italy but Veneto's Bassano del Grappa is the historical capital. Modern grappa varies enormously — from rough industrial (€8/bottle) to refined Riserva aged in oak (€80–250/bottle).
Bassano del Grappa
The historical capital — town named after the spirit. Poli (since 1898), Nardini (since 1779). Distillery visits with tastings €15–35. Day-trip from Venice (1h drive) or Padua. Plus the Ponte degli Alpini wooden bridge designed by Palladio.
Verona
Veneto wine + grappa pairing. Distilleria Bonaventura Maschio, Distilleria Berta. Wine bars in Verona stock 30+ grappa varieties. Combined with Veneto wine-tour weekends.
Trento (Trentino)
Trento Trentino grappa from Müller-Thurgau, Pinot Grigio, Chardonnay grape pomace. Distilleria Marzadro, Distillerie Lunelli (Ferrari spumante owners). Alpine-precision distillation traditions.
Turin (Piedmont)
Turin Piedmontese grappa from Barolo, Barbera, Nebbiolo grapes. Distilleria Marolo, Distilleria Berta. Premium tier — the Barolo-grappa is the most prestigious.
Friuli (Udine, Trieste)
Trieste, Udine — Friulian grappa from Friuli's white grape pomace. Lighter style than Veneto. Less famous internationally.
Tasting strategy
Single-grape grappa (monovitigno) — Müller-Thurgau, Picolit, Sagrantino each different. Riserva (oak-aged) softer than unaged white grappa. Drink at room temperature in tulip-shaped glass. Aperitivo or digestivo position depending on style.
Strategy
Distillery tours often combined with grape harvest (September-October) — see whole production cycle. Grappa export limits — under €430 typically duty-free returning home. Read our craft distilleries companion for non-Italian distillates.
