Some "Instagrammable" cities live up to the marketing; others don't. Here's the honest sort.
Tier 1 — genuinely photogenic
- Santorini (Imerovigli): Caldera + blue domes. Real.
- Cinque Terre (Vernazza, off-season): Cliff villages.
- Cappadocia (Uçhisar dawn): Balloons + cave hotels.
- Hallstatt (off-day-tripper season): Mountain-lake-village.
- Bruges (off-season): Canals.
Tier 2 — photogenic city stays
- Lisbon: Pastel facades, miradouros.
- Lisbon's Belém: Maritime monuments.
- Sintra: Pena Palace.
- Florence: Renaissance density.
- Edinburgh: Royal Mile + castle.
Tier 3 — niche photographer-favorites
- Wrocław: Painted dwarves and market square.
- Plovdiv Old Town: Bulgarian Revival houses.
- Mostar Bridge: Ottoman bridge.
- Salamanca + Coimbra: University towns.
Where Instagram lies
- Trevi Fountain: Always packed; expectation vs reality issue.
- Eiffel Tower up close: The "love-lock" bridge is fenced now.
- Colosseum street: Always crowded with vendors.
- Big Ben + bus shot: Typically hundreds of others doing same.
Strategy
- Off-season + dawn: Best photos are 7-9am before crowds.
- Side-streets: Often more photogenic than main attractions.
- Local photographer: Hire 1-2 hour session for keeper photos.
