Three Italian shoe traditions
Naples bespoke (su misura — pattern made to your foot, fully hand-stitched, 8–14 weeks turnaround), Florence handcrafted (limited series, hand-finished, in-shop measurement), Milan industrial-luxury (high-quality factory production, large showrooms). Each has its base.
Naples
Naples is the global bespoke-shoes capital. Mannina (since 1962, classic Neapolitan style), Riccardo Bestetti, Pasquale Caropreso, Antonio Meccariello. €4,000–8,000 for first pair bespoke (lasts and patterns reusable; subsequent pairs €2,500–4,000). 3+ trips required: measurement, baste fitting, final fitting + delivery.
Florence
Florence Stefano Bemer (taken over by Scuola del Cuoio family — bespoke + ready-to-wear), Roberto Ugolini, Saskia Wittmer (only female bespoke shoemaker in Florence). €3,500–6,000 bespoke. Plus historic Calzoleria Mannina at Ponte Vecchio (different from Naples Mannina). Florence's Scuola del Cuoio teaches the craft.
Milan
Milan Tod's flagship (Marina San Babila), Santoni Milano, Magnanni Italia, Bontoni. Industrial-luxury — high quality at €600–2,500 per pair off-the-shelf. Quadrilatero della Moda base.
Rome
Rome Bottega Senatoria (since 1991), De Bonis (since 1922). Less famous than Naples/Florence but capital-city customers. Some heritage holdouts.
London (English alternative)
London Northampton-made shoes (Crockett & Jones, Edward Green, John Lobb) — different tradition (English-stiff vs Italian-soft). Bond Street and St James's flagship stores. Englishbench-made shoes £600–2,000 ready, £4,000+ bespoke.
