Cities-in-mountains vs cities-with-views
Two categories: small cities surrounded by mountains where Alps loom over rooftops (Innsbruck, Zermatt, Chamonix), and larger cities with mountain backdrops (Sarajevo, Granada, Edinburgh). Below: best in each.
Innsbruck
Austrian Alps' classic mountain city. Karwendel range visible from old town; cable car (Nordkette) climbs from city center to summit in 25 minutes. Olympics-twice host. Combined skiing + city culture. Vienna-Innsbruck train 5h.
Zermatt
Swiss village (no cars in town). Matterhorn dominates every view. Gornergrat railway. Train-only access. Stay overnight to see sunset Matterhorn glow.
Chamonix
French chamonixe-Mont Blanc valley. Mont Blanc (4,810m) Western Europe's highest peak visible from town. Aiguille du Midi cable car. Year-round mountaineering, climbing, skiing.
Bergen
Norwegian Bergen sits surrounded by 7 mountains. Fløibanen funicular up Mount Fløyen. Bryggen UNESCO waterfront. Rainy 250 days/year — accept the wet.
Sarajevo
Bosnian capital wedged between mountains. Bjelašnica, Igman, Trebević 1984 Olympic peaks. Cable car to Trebević (since 2018). Cheaper than Western European mountain cities.
Granada
Granada Sierra Nevada (3,479m) visible from Albaicín terraces. Skiing 30 min from old town. The visual contrast — Andalusian moorish architecture against snowcapped peaks — distinctive.
Edinburgh
Edinburgh Arthur's Seat (250m) sits within the city center. Calton Hill panorama. Not Alps-scale but Scottish-dramatic.
Lugano
Swiss-Italian Ticino. Monte Brè and Monte San Salvatore funiculars from city. Lake Lugano below. Italian-Swiss combination.
Salzburg
Salzburg small Austrian city flanked by Untersberg (1,973m) and Salzburg Alps. Hohensalzburg fortress overlooks. Mozart's town with serious mountains.
Strategy
Stay overnight — day-trippers miss morning and evening light. Cable cars often close December–March (snow). Book mountain-view hotel rooms (often 30–50% upcharge but worth it).
