Stationery as souvenir
Light, packable, distinctive — stationery is the underrated travel souvenir. The cities below have either heritage manufacturers or dedicated boutiques carrying serious paper, ink, and pen brands.
Florence
Florence Pineider (1774, leather-bound journals + marbled paper), Il Papiro (Florentine marbled paper, multiple shops), Giulio Giannini e Figlio (since 1856). Florentine marbled paper is the regional craft — €10–80 per sheet. Plus Cartoleria Gobbi for wax seals and traditional stationery.
Paris
Paris Sennelier (since 1887, art supplies + premium paper), G. Lalo writing paper, Mont Blanc flagship, Stylus pen specialist shops in Saint-Germain. Plus Marie Papier (Marie de Beaumarchais's stationery, refined Parisian aesthetic).
London
London Smythson (1887, Bond Street), Choosing Keeping (Soho, Japanese-imported plus European), Liberty stationery section. Smythson's diaries and notebooks are the British heritage. Pricey (£60–250 for journal).
Vienna
Vienna Stein Schreibwaren (writing-supply), Tobiwabohn (wood pens). Vienna's Habsburg-era stationery culture preserved in surviving heritage shops.
Stockholm
Stockholm Ordning & Reda (Swedish minimalist stationery brand, multiple stores). Akademibokhandeln in Stockholm. Less fountain-pen tradition; strong on contemporary design.
Strategy
Florentine marbled paper packs flat in checked bags; pens carry-on. Heritage shops in Florence often family-run, closed Sundays. Combined paper-buying tour 2 hours minimum. Bookshops the obvious companion guide.
