Niche vs designer
Niche perfume = small houses focused on creative scents (Frédéric Malle, Diptyque, Le Labo, Serge Lutens) rather than mass-market fashion-house fragrances (Dior, Chanel, Tom Ford). Niche prices €100–400 per 50–100ml; the buying experience itself is part of the appeal.
Paris
Paris the niche capital. Frédéric Malle Avenue Victor Hugo, Diptyque Saint-Germain, Serge Lutens Palais Royal, Caron, Guerlain at Champs-Élysées. Le Marais and Saint-Germain dense.
Florence
Florence Officina Profumo-Farmaceutica di Santa Maria Novella — operating since 1612, in a 14th-century friary. Mercato Centrale neighborhood. Lorenzo Villoresi, Aquaflor, Profumum Roma at Italian niche houses also Florence-clustered.
London
London Penhaligon's, Floris (1730), Jo Malone, Ormonde Jayne, Roja Parfums. Strong British perfume tradition focused on classic English garden scents. Mayfair and Marylebone dense.
Cologne
Cologne Eau de Cologne (4711) literally invented here in 1709. Farina 1709 still operating in original location near Domkloster. Historical perfumery for €18–60 — accessible niche entry point.
Grasse
Not a city per se, but France's perfume town near Cannes. Fragonard, Galimard, Molinard offer factory tours and personal-perfume workshops. Day-trip from Nice or Cannes.
Strategy
Test on skin, not paper. Your second-favorite scent on paper often becomes the winner on skin chemistry. Carry samples for 2–3 days before buying. Tax-free shopping for non-EU residents on €100+ purchases.
