Etching/intaglio (acid-bitten copper plate), lithography (greasy drawing on stone), screenprinting (stencil through fine mesh), woodcut/wood engraving (carved relief), monotype. The cities below have access to multiple presses and instructors, often through workshop centers (atelier) you can join short-term.
Paris
Paris Atelier Romain Granai, Atelier Lacourière-Frélaut (legendary intaglio atelier, ouvre Renoir-Picasso prints). Cité Internationale des Arts residency program. Imprimerie Nationale historic engraving. Weekend etching workshops €100–250.
London
London East London Printmakers (Hackney — open-access studio with all techniques), Print Club London (also Hackney), London Print Studio. Day workshops £80–150; membership £100–200/month for full access. East London (Hackney) dense.
Berlin
Berlin Druckwerkstatt im Kulturwerk des bbk berlin (artist association open-access, multiple techniques), DRESDNER Künstlerschmiede. Cheaper than London. Kreuzberg dense.
Florence
Florence Il Bisonte — printmaking school + atelier. Etching, lithography, woodblock courses 1–4 weeks for foreign students. €600–2,000 program fees. Italian Renaissance printmaking heritage.
Krakow
Krakow Academy of Fine Arts — strong Polish printmaking tradition. Triennale Internationale de la Gravure. Less English-language workshop access but masterclass intensives August often available.
Edinburgh
Edinburgh Edinburgh Printmakers (1967, Scotland's first open-access print studio) at Castle Mills. Workshops, courses, residencies.
Strategy
Single-day intro workshops €80–150; weekend intensive €200–500; week-long courses €600–1,500. Studio membership for ongoing access €80–200/month. Shipping prints back home — cardboard tubes mandatory; check airline carry-on rules.
