Living traditions
Several European cities preserve specific puppet-theater traditions that are still performed nightly. Many UNESCO-listed. Below are the cities where you can see these in operation.
Prague
Prague National Marionette Theatre stages Don Giovanni nightly with marionettes (since 1991, this exact production). 90 minutes; Mozart's full opera shortened. Tickets €25–35. National Theatre and Spejbl & Hurvínek Theatre also active. Puppet tradition Czech UNESCO heritage.
Salzburg
Salzburg Salzburger Marionettentheater (1913) — full operatic Mozart productions with marionettes. Magic Flute, Bastien und Bastienne, plus contemporary works. €25–40. The marionettes themselves are works of art — puppet-craft museum onsite.
Palermo and Catania (Sicily)
Palermo Opera dei Pupi (Sicilian puppet theater) — UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage. Antonio Pasqualino Museum, Cuticchio family theater. Stories of Charlemagne and the paladins. Catania has its own Opera dei Pupi tradition. Tickets €10–15; small intimate venues.
Lyon
Lyon Théâtre Le Guignol — origin city of Guignol, the famous French hand puppet character (1808). Children-friendly traditional shows.
Brussels
Brussels Théâtre Royal de Toone — five-generation marionette theater, in Centre Historique. Performances in French, English, sometimes Dutch.
Strategy
Family-friendly Salzburg and Prague (tourist-Mozart adaptations); more historical Palermo Opera dei Pupi. Book Prague Don Giovanni 1–2 days ahead summer. Salzburg Festival (July-August) raises ticket prices and competition.
