Most European travelers come back. Here's the honest sort of which cities reward multi-trip layering.
Cities that reward 4-6 visits
- Paris: 20 arrondissements; never feels exhausted. Each arrondissement is its own trip.
- London: Same depth. East End vs Soho vs South Ken vs Notting Hill = different cities.
- Rome: Ancient Rome + Renaissance Rome + Baroque Rome + modern Rome.
- Berlin: Each neighborhood functionally separate.
- Istanbul: Historical + Galata + Asian + neighborhood Istanbul = 4-5 trips.
Cities that reward 2-3 visits
- Florence: First trip = Uffizi-and-Duomo. Second = Tuscany base. Third = Renaissance deep.
- Madrid: First = Prado. Second = neighborhoods. Third = day-trips.
- Lisbon: First = central. Second = Mouraria + Belém. Third = Sintra-deep + Alentejo.
- Vienna: First = District 1. Second = District 7 + 2. Third = music + cuisine deep.
Cities you don't need to revisit
- Bruges, Hallstatt, Český Krumlov: One thorough visit covers them.
- Pisa: Tower + lunch is a half-day, not a return trip.
- Monaco: Different than Nice anyway.
Strategy
For multi-trip travelers, the right approach is: 5-6 nights per city. Don't try to "see everything" — pick a theme (food, museums, architecture, neighborhoods) and stay in one neighborhood for the trip. Build up the city across visits.
For specific second-trip alternatives see cities for second trip.
