Why supply concentrates
Pre-loved luxury supply comes from estates, divorces, and downsizing. Cities with multi-generational old wealth (Paris, Milan, London) have far deeper inventories than recent-money cities. Vintage Hermès Birkins surface in Paris consignment monthly; you'll wait years in Berlin.
Paris
Paris is the global capital. Le Marais (rue de Turenne, rue Charlot) has dozens of dépôt-vente shops. Didier Ludot (Palais Royal) for haute couture vintage. Rue de la Pompe for "bourgeois" pre-loved. Le Marais is the obvious base.
Milan
Milan rivals Paris for Italian designers — vintage Versace, Gianfranco Ferré, early Prada surface here. Cavalli e Nastri (Brera, Porta Genova) is the institution. Brera dense with consignment.
London
London Cudoni, William Vintage, Sign of the Times. Strong on British heritage (Burberry, Margaret Howell, Mulberry) and Japanese designer vintage (Comme des Garçons, Yohji). Notting Hill and Shoreditch for boutiques.
Antwerp
Antwerp is the dark horse. Belgian-school vintage (Margiela, Demeulemeester, Van Noten) surfaces here in volumes Paris can't match. Labels Inc. and Renaissance.
Vienna
Vienna has serious old-money supply — vintage furs, Hermès, Vienna Chanel boutique relics. Quieter scene, less competition. Innere Stadt consignment.
Strategy
Authenticate before buying — even reputable shops occasionally carry fakes. Vestiaire Collective and similar online platforms ship from these inventories anyway, but in-person browsing surfaces unique pieces. Read our vintage clothing companion for non-luxury pre-loved.
