Long airport layovers can be a free European mini-trip. Here's the honest sort.
Tier 1 — fast airport-to-city, dense in 6-8 hours
- Reykjavík (KEF): 45 min to centre. Icelandair offers free stopovers up to 7 days. Excellent.
- Helsinki (HEL): 30 min to centre. Senate Square + harbor + lunch. Finnair stopover program.
- Copenhagen (CPH): 15 min metro to centre. Easy 6-hour visit covers Strøget + lunch.
- Amsterdam (AMS): 15 min train to centre. Rijksmuseum + canal walk + lunch.
- Lisbon (LIS): 25 min metro to centre. Easy 6-hour visit.
Tier 2 — workable for 8+ hour layovers
- Paris CDG / ORY: 35 min RER. 8 hours minimum to make it worthwhile.
- Madrid (MAD): 30 min metro. Quick Prado visit + lunch.
- Vienna (VIE): 16 min CAT train. Stephansdom + coffee.
- Munich (MUC): 40 min S-Bahn. Tighter than the others.
- Zurich (ZRH): 10 min train. Excellent for short layovers — Bahnhofstrasse walk + lake.
Tier 3 — usually not worth leaving the airport
- Frankfurt (FRA): 12 min train but the city is generic. Stay in airport unless 12+ hours.
- London Heathrow / Gatwick: 45-60 min to central London. Need 10+ hours to make sense.
- Barcelona (BCN): 30-35 min train. Possible but immigration can eat time.
- Istanbul (IST): 60 min to Sultanahmet. Need a long layover or use Turkish Airlines stopover program.
What you need
- Schengen entry: Some airlines/countries require visa for layover even if not flying out same airport.
- Bag check: Most major airports have left-luggage at €5-€15 for the day.
- Time buffer: Aim to be back at airport 3 hours before next flight.
Strategy
Plan ahead: pre-buy metro tickets (or have credit-card NFC for tap-and-go). Pick a single sight + lunch — don't try to "see" the city in one stopover.
