The capital is Berlin
No other European city competes with Berlin's depth, programming, or cultural status for techno. The cities below are the secondary scenes — strong, growing, but distinct from Berlin's institutional weight.
Berlin
Berlin Berghain/Panorama Bar (the temple), Tresor (the originator), KitKat, About Blank, Sisyphos. Friday-Sunday club marathons standard. Door policies famously selective at Berghain — wear black, go alone or in pairs, sober. Friedrichshain and Kreuzberg dense.
Amsterdam
Amsterdam De School (closed early 2024 — major loss), Shelter, RADION, Garage Noord. Amsterdam Dance Event (October) the trade-fair week. Dutch scene polished, programming-rich.
Barcelona
Barcelona Razzmatazz (multi-room mega-club), Apolo, Pacha. Sónar Festival (June) draws international DJs for 4-day takeover. Less hardcore-techno than Berlin; more variety.
Bucharest
Bucharest's underground scene — Control, Mercato, Energiea — and the Sunwaves Festival (twice yearly at Mamaia coast) are the Romanian techno phenomenon. Romanian house sound (Petre Inspirescu, Rhadoo, Raresh) globally exported.
Cluj-Napoca
Cluj's Untold Festival (August) plus year-round small-club scene. Romania's secondary techno hub. Affordable.
Other strong scenes
Lisbon (Lux Frágil), Paris (Concrete-shaped scene), Brussels (Fuse). All have rotating world-class bookings.
Strategy
Sleep schedule shifts — clubs open midnight, fill 2am, peak 4–6am. Keep phones away — many clubs sticker-cover cameras. Wristband policy at Berghain (no re-entry, then re-entry possible). Check booking 1–2 days ahead via Resident Advisor.
