Why specific cities
Film-camera supply concentrates where photo culture stayed strong through the digital transition (London, Paris, Tokyo) plus former-Soviet bloc cities where photographers held onto Leicas and Hasselblads when prices crashed. Vintage camera shops require both supply and informed buyers — both cluster in cities below.
London
London MW Classic Cameras (Leica specialist), Aperture Photographic (Rathbone Place — multi-format), West End Cameras, Camera City. Leica M3-M6 €1,500–4,000 typical. Reliable authentication and CLA service. Soho/Fitzrovia dense.
Paris
Paris Mongiardino (Place de la Madeleine, longtime Leica), Photo Mongiardino, plus shops in Le Marais. Wider European-brand stock than London — Voigtländer, Contax, Lino. Drouot auctions occasionally feature serious vintage lots.
Berlin
Berlin Foto Impex (Berlin shop + global mail-order). East German manufacturers (Praktica, Pentacon, Welta) underpriced. Mittelformat (medium-format) Hasselblad and Rolleiflex steady supply.
Vienna
Vienna Leica Galerie. Schauplatz für Fotografie WestLicht hosts world-record-setting auctions of rare Leicas (the most expensive cameras ever sold passed through here). Even non-collectors should browse.
Prague
Prague Foto Škoda, Bazar Foto. Czech-made Flexaret medium-format cameras (Meopta) and older Soviet cameras (Zenit, FED, Kiev) at bargain prices.
Munich
Munich Photo Sauter, Foto Klippel. Strong on collectible Voigtländer and Zeiss Ikon cameras. Bavarian heritage of optics.
Strategy
Film camera prices climbing 2020–2026 — supply finite. Buy from established shops with return policy, not flea markets. CLA (clean-lubricate-adjust) service often €100–300 for proper restoration. Eight-day testing period standard at reputable shops. Read our photography guide for shooting locations.
