Best European Cities With Great Parks and Green Spaces

By FredolinePublished 2026-05-23Reviewed 2026-05-238 min read

Some European cities have parks that anchor stays. Others advertise green spaces that don't deliver. Here's the honest sort.

Tier 1 — exceptional urban parks

  • London: Hyde Park + Kensington Gardens, Regent's Park, Hampstead Heath. World class.
  • Munich: Englischer Garten — bigger than Central Park.
  • Madrid: Retiro Park (UNESCO).
  • Paris: Bois de Vincennes + Jardin du Luxembourg + Tuileries.
  • Berlin: Tiergarten + Tempelhofer Feld (former airport).
  • Vienna: Prater + Stadtpark.

Tier 2 — strong park culture

  • Copenhagen: Frederiksberg Have + Tivoli Gardens (in season).
  • Stockholm: Djurgården island.
  • Helsinki: Esplanade + Töölö Bay.
  • Amsterdam: Vondelpark.
  • Edinburgh: Holyrood Park (with Arthur's Seat hike).

Tier 3 — surprisingly green

  • Lisbon Belém: The riverside park.
  • Salzburg Mirabell Gardens: Compact but iconic.
  • Athens National Garden + Pedion tou Areos: Better than expected.
  • Florence Boboli Gardens: Renaissance terraced gardens.

What's overrated

  • Cinque Terre "trails": Most are crowded, narrow, fenced.
  • Hampstead Heath in winter: Excellent but dark by 4pm.
  • Tivoli Gardens off-season: Closed half the year.

Strategy

Park-anchored stays work best in spring (May) and autumn (September-October). Avoid August (parks emptier — locals on holiday, restaurants closed) and winter (dark, often closed).
