Some European cities work in 24 hours; others are insulted by it. Here's the honest sort.
Cities that genuinely work in 24 hours
- Dubrovnik: Old Town walls + Stradun + lunch + sunset. 24h covers it.
- Bruges: Canals + belfry + chocolate + lunch. Easy 24h.
- Heidelberg: Castle + Hauptstraße + Neckar walk.
- Ljubljana: Compact centre. Castle + river + market.
- Nuremberg: Walled Altstadt + castle + cathedral + lunch.
- Bath: Roman Baths + Royal Crescent + Pulteney Bridge.
- Split: Diocletian's Palace + Riva + lunch.
- Porto (overnight): Tight, but Ribeira + port lodges + Livraria Lello fits.
Cities that need 2-3 days minimum
- Rome, Paris, London: 24 hours feels like watching a trailer.
- Berlin, Madrid: Same.
- Istanbul: 5+ days minimum.
- Athens + sights outside the Acropolis: 3 days minimum.
Cities that work as half-day stops only
- Pisa: Tower + lunch is 4 hours.
- Brussels: Grand Place + chocolate + lunch.
- Verona: Arena + Juliet's house + lunch.
Strategy
For a single-day European city, pick one with a compact UNESCO core under 2 km wide. Plan: arrive 9-10am, central walking tour, lunch, slow afternoon, sunset, dinner. Don't try to "cover" — pick depth on one neighborhood.
