Some European countries are dramatically under-touristed for their offer. Here's the honest sort.
Tier 1 — genuinely underrated
- Albania: Beaches that match Croatia at a third the price. Tirana changing fast. Berat + Gjirokastër are UNESCO Ottoman towns. Albanian Riviera is Greece-quality.
- Slovenia: Compact, dramatic — Alps + coast + capital in 7 days. Ljubljana + Bled + Piran.
- Bulgaria: Sofia + Plovdiv (one of Europe's oldest cities) at very low prices.
- Romania: Transylvania (Brașov, Sibiu) + Bucharest. Castles + folk culture.
- North Macedonia: Lake Ohrid (UNESCO) + Skopje. Untouristed.
Tier 2 — strong but emerging
- Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia: Baltic loop. Vilnius + Riga + Tallinn.
- Montenegro: Kotor + Adriatic coast.
- Bosnia + Herzegovina: Sarajevo + Mostar. War history + Ottoman heritage.
- Slovakia: Bratislava + High Tatras + Košice underrated.
Tier 3 — undertouristed within bigger countries
- Sicily (within Italy): Underrated even though Italy isn't.
- Apulia (within Italy): Lecce, Alberobello.
- Asturias + Galicia (within Spain): Northern coast — different climate, food, culture.
- Brittany (within France): Saint-Malo, Brest, Quimper.
- Wales (within UK): Snowdonia, Cardiff, Swansea.
What's overrated
- "Hidden gems" articles for Tuscany, Provence, Greek islands: Already over-touristed.
- Iceland's Blue Lagoon: Genuinely overcrowded; smaller geothermal pools across Iceland are the trip.
- Hallstatt, Český Krumlov: Day-tripper crush ruins them.
Strategy
Visit underrated countries before they catch on. Albania in 2026 looks like Croatia did in 2010 — brilliant before the crowds. The same is true of central-eastern European countries. Book ahead of trends, not behind.
