Pickpocket warnings are over-hyped in some cities and under-stated in others. Here's the honest map.
Highest-risk pickpocket cities
- Barcelona: Las Ramblas and metro stations are notorious. Front pocket, zip bags, no phones in back pockets. Reported losses are common.
- Rome: Termini station, the metro to the Vatican, the Spanish Steps area. Same precautions.
- Paris: RER B (airport line), Trocadéro, Sacré-Cœur, the area around the Louvre. Especially common is the petition scam — refuse to engage.
- Madrid: Sol, Gran Vía, the metro near Atocha.
- Prague: Charles Bridge area, especially in summer crowds.
Moderate-risk cities
- Florence: Tourist areas around the Duomo and Ponte Vecchio.
- Lisbon: Tram 28 and around Rossio square.
- Athens: Metro, especially Line 3 to the airport.
- Naples: Spaccanapoli area, Quartieri Spagnoli at night.
- Istanbul: Sultanahmet tram stops, Grand Bazaar.
Low-risk cities (mostly)
- Scandinavian capitals: Negligible pickpocket activity.
- Most German cities: Low risk except major train stations.
- Vienna, Munich: Generally safe.
- Smaller European cities (Bath, Bruges, Salzburg): Negligible.
Common pickpocket tactics
- Fake petition signers: Usually women approaching with clipboards. Walk away.
- Rosemary/bracelet sellers: They tie something on your wrist, then demand payment. Don't extend your arm.
- Spilled coffee / mustard: Someone "helps" clean while a partner picks pocket.
- Fake police asking to see your wallet: Real police never do this. Ask for ID and walk to a station.
- Crowded metro / bus pressure: Hands on bag at all times.
Strategy
- Money belt or front-zip bag for valuables.
- Daily cash budget in front pocket only.
- Phone with strap or zipped pocket only.
- Travel insurance is essential — verify it covers theft.
- Photograph passport and credit cards; store digital copies.
