European Cities That Disappoint Most Travelers

By FredolinePublished 2026-04-28Reviewed 2026-04-2810 min read

Not every famous European city earns its reputation. Here's the honest list of cities most travelers find disappointing — and what to substitute.

Brussels — the EU bureaucratic capital

The Grand Place is genuinely magnificent for an hour. After that, Brussels is wide boulevards, EU office buildings, and dead-after-7pm streets. Best as a 1-day stop, not a 3-day stay. Substitute: Ghent or Antwerp.

Frankfurt — the airport city

Frankfurt's centre is glass-and-steel, mostly because the historic centre was bombed. The half-rebuilt Römerberg is small. Best as a 1-day stop or layover. Substitute: Heidelberg or Dresden.

Belgrade — sprawling and unfocused

Belgrade's nightlife is real, but the city itself is large, unwalkable, and lacks the photogenic core most Balkan capitals have. Substitute: Sarajevo or Zagreb.

Las Vegas-style Mediterranean resorts

Anywhere marketed as "all-inclusive resort" on the Costa del Sol, Algarve, or eastern Crete is a different trip than European travel. Substitute: Seville + Granada for a real Andalusia trip.

Dublin — overpriced and watered down

Dublin's Temple Bar is a tourist-stag-night zone. The actual Dublin (Stoneybatter, the Liberties, South City Centre quieter parts) is good but expensive — $400+ hotels for mediocre product. Substitute: Galway for a smaller, cheaper, equally-fun trip.

Mykonos in summer

The classic Mykonos trip is fine for 25-year-old club travelers and brutal for everyone else — €25 cocktails, prices doubled from June, party-boats. Substitute: Santorini for the photo, Naxos or Paros for actual Greek-island life.

Capri (day-trippers)

A day-trip to Capri is one of the worst-value tourist experiences in Italy — boats, queues, €40 lunches, 6 hours of crowd. Capri stays (overnight) are different and worth it. Substitute: Procida (15 min from Naples by ferry) is what Capri was 50 years ago.

Geneva — Switzerland for diplomats

Geneva is fine but isn't the Switzerland trip most travelers want. It's lake-and-banks. Substitute: Lucerne for the iconic Switzerland.

Paris in August

Most of Paris is on holiday. Half the bistros close. Substitute: any other month in Paris.

Why this list exists

Marketing rewards confident claims. "Brussels: surprisingly amazing" and "Frankfurt: hidden gem" articles get clicks. The reality is that most European cities are pretty good and a small number genuinely don't earn 3 nights of your time. Pick deliberately.
