Greek islands are not interchangeable. Picking the wrong one for your trip type can ruin a week. Here's the honest sort.
Santorini — for the photo and honeymoon
Santorini is the iconic caldera-and-blue-domes photo. Crowded in July-August, expensive year-round. Stay in Imerovigli over Oia for the same view without 1500-stranger sunsets. Best for: 2-3 night honeymoon, photo-focused trips. Don't go for relaxation — it's frenetic.
Crete — for variety and depth
Crete is the largest island — Chania (west) is the prettier base, Heraklion (centre) the historical (Knossos), Rethymno splits the difference. Beaches, mountains, gorges, food. Best for: 7-10 night trips, anyone wanting variety beyond beach-only.
Naxos — for beaches and food
Naxos is the Cyclades' food island — best Greek food on any island, calm beaches, real local life. Best for: 5-7 night beach-and-food trips, families, anyone tired of Mykonos prices.
Paros / Antiparos — for the slow trip
Paros is Naxos's quieter neighbor — design hotels, Naoussa village, beaches. Best for: couples, longer slow trips.
Hydra — for the day-trip-from-Athens or 1-2 night escape
Hydra is car-free, 90 min ferry from Athens. Best for: short escapes, day trips, romantic 2-night stays.
Mykonos — only if you want the party
Mykonos is the party island. €25 cocktails, beach clubs, late nights. Honeymooners go to Santorini for a reason. Best for: under-30 group trips. Skip otherwise.
Corfu / Zakynthos / Kefalonia — for the Ionian beaches
The Ionian islands are different — greener, more Italian-influenced (Venetian rule), softer beaches. Best for: families, longer slower trips, anyone tired of Cycladic blue-and-white.
What to avoid
- Mykonos in August at peak: Doubled prices, packed everywhere.
- Santorini for "relaxation": Frenetic. Hire a villa elsewhere.
- Tiny islands without ferry connections in shoulder season: Verify October ferry schedules.
- Anywhere in winter (Nov-March): Most ferries and restaurants close.
Strategy
Pick 1 island for 7 days minus a Cycladic-hop weekend (Naxos + Santorini), or 2 islands for 10 days. Don't try 4 islands in a week — you'll spend 4 days on ferries.
