Norway is bigger than first-timers think. Oslo to Bergen is a 7-hour train; the fjords add another day. Here's the honest 7-day plan.
Best 7-day Norway (south + fjords)
- Day 1-2: Oslo (Vigeland Park, Aker Brygge, Munch museum). Stay in Grünerløkka for food, Sentrum for sights.
- Day 3-4: Norway in a Nutshell route — Oslo to Bergen via Flåm/Aurlandsfjord. Train + boat + train. Spectacular.
- Day 5-6: Bergen (Bryggen, fish market, Fløibanen). Stay near Bryggen.
- Day 7: Day-trip to a smaller fjord (Nærøyfjord by ferry from Bergen) or fly back.
Alternative: Lofoten (north)
For dramatic landscape: fly Oslo-Bodø, ferry to Lofoten, 5 nights road-tripping. But it's a different trip — pick this OR Bergen+fjords, not both in 7 days.
Norway in a Nutshell timing
Daylight matters. Late September to mid-March daylight is short — book early-morning departures. Summer (May-August) has 18+ hours of light, perfect for the route.
What to skip on 7 days
- Tromsø + Northern Lights: Different trip. Fly there for 3 nights minimum if it's the focus.
- Stavanger and Pulpit Rock: Worth it but adds 2 nights minimum. Pick this over Bergen for shorter trip.
- Going past Bergen: The Nordfjord and Geirangerfjord need rental cars and 3+ extra nights.
Cost reality
Norway is the most-expensive Nordic country. Budget €200-€350/day for a comfortable trip including hotels, transport, meals. Self-catering apartments and supermarket lunches save real money.
