Where to Stay in Avignon: Intra-muros or Île Barthelasse?

By FredolinePublished 2026-05-13Reviewed 2026-05-136 min read

Avignon is small. The pick is inside-the-walls vs across-the-Rhône.

Intra-muros — for first-timers and festival

Intra-muros is inside the medieval walls — Palais des Papes, Place de l'Horloge, dense restaurants, festival venues. Best for: 1-2 night first visits, Avignon Festival stays (July), sights focus.

Île Barthelasse — for the photo and value

Île Barthelasse is the Rhône island opposite the walled city — leafy, residential, with the famous Pont Saint-Bénézet view back at the walls. Best for: festival-overflow stays, families, anyone wanting iconic walls-view-from-room.

What to avoid

  • Anywhere outside the walls or island marketed as "Avignon": Suburban Provence; you'll commute.
  • Hotels in Villeneuve-lès-Avignon: Across the river but separately-administered; works for some but verify the bridge access.

Festival timing (July)

The Festival d'Avignon nearly triples prices on both sides. Book 8+ months ahead. Île Barthelasse is the best festival-overflow option if intra-muros is full.

Quick pick

First-time, festival, sights focus: Intra-muros. Family or budget, view-focused: Île Barthelasse.

Compare: Intra-muros vs Île Barthelasse.
