Where to Stay in Cologne: Altstadt or Belgian Quarter?

By FredolinePublished 2026-05-10Reviewed 2026-05-107 min read

Cologne is small. The pick is touristy-cathedral-side or trendy-Belgian-quarter.

Altstadt — for first-timers

Altstadt is the cathedral-side core — Dom, Hauptbahnhof, Brauhaus density. Premium pricing during fairs (Karneval, Photokina). Best for: 1-2 night first visits, sights-focused trips, train-heavy itineraries.

Belgian Quarter — for food and design

Belgisches Viertel is the post-war design-shop and food quarter west of Altstadt — Aachener Straße strip, Rudolfplatz nearby. Best for: 2-3 night stays, food-focused trips, anyone under 40.

What to avoid

  • Hotels marketed as "Cologne" 30+ km out: Verify on a map.
  • Anywhere near the train station: Sketchy at night.
  • During Karneval (Feb-Mar): Anywhere central is impossible to sleep through.

Quick pick

First-time, cathedral focus: Altstadt. Food and design: Belgian Quarter.

Compare: Altstadt vs Belgian Quarter.
