Where to Stay in Corfu: Old Town or Paleokastritsa?

By FredolinePublished 2026-05-16Reviewed 2026-05-166 min read

Corfu is the most-Italian-feeling Greek island (Venetian rule for centuries). Pick is mostly Old Town vs west-coast beaches.

Old Town — for first-timers

Old Town is the UNESCO Italian-influenced centre — Old Fortress, Liston arcade (looks like a Venetian café strip), narrow lanes. Best for: first-time visits, history focus, couples.

Paleokastritsa — for beach

Paleokastritsa is the west coast — dramatic coves, swimming, cliff-side hotels. Best for: beach-focused trips, photo focus, anyone with a rental car.

What to avoid

  • Sidari resort strip on the north coast: British package zone.
  • Kavos in the south: Same.
  • Anywhere requiring 1h+ drive from Corfu Town: Verify before booking.

Combined Corfu trip

Best 5-7 day Corfu: 3 Old Town + 2-3 Paleokastritsa or another west-coast base. Rental car essential for non-Old-Town stays.

Compare: Old Town vs Paleokastritsa.
