Cyprus has 4 main tourist cities — Limassol, Paphos, Larnaca, Nicosia. Most travelers pick one base for 5-7 nights.
Limassol — for modern beach city
Limassol is the modern beach-and-business city. Old Town for atmosphere; the marina for polished modern. Best for: 5-7 night beach + city stays, foodies (Cyprus's best food scene).
Paphos — for history
Paphos has the UNESCO Roman mosaics, the Tombs of the Kings, the harbor. Kato Paphos is the lower town near the harbor. Best for: 4-5 night history-focused stays.
Larnaca — for the airport
Larnaca is the budget arrival point with the main international airport. The Old Town is small; the seafront promenade is fine. Best for: 1-2 night transit stays, budget trips. Most travelers move to Limassol or Paphos for actual stays.
Nicosia — for the divided capital
Nicosia is the divided capital — UN-administered Green Line splits the old city. Half-day visit from Limassol or Larnaca beats overnight unless geopolitical history is the trip.
What to avoid
- Ayia Napa unless party-focused: British package-stag-night zone.
- Northern Cyprus mainland trips without research: Border crossing complications.
- Anywhere advertised as "5-min walk to beach": Verify — Cyprus beaches are often 15+ min walk from "beach" hotels.
Best season
Year-round. Summer (July-August) is hot (35°C). Sept-Oct and April-May are perfect. Winter (Dec-Feb) is mild — daytime highs 16-20°C — for off-season Mediterranean trips.
