Dublin is over-priced for a small capital. The neighborhood pick determines whether you're paying €450 a night for a stag-night zone (Temple Bar) or €180 for the same city away from the worst of it.
South City Centre — for first-timers
South City Centre is the polished tourist-and-business core — Trinity, Grafton Street, Merrion Square. Premium pricing. Best for: first-time visits, sights-focused trips, anyone over 35.
The Liberties — for value and Guinness
The Liberties is just west of the centre — Guinness Storehouse, dense historic pubs, recently-gentrifying. 25-35% cheaper than South Side. Best for: beer-focused trips, budget-conscious stays.
Stoneybatter — for hip residential
Stoneybatter is north of the Liffey — narrow Georgian rows, dense brunch-and-bar strip on Manor Street. Best for: repeat Dublin visits, food-focused stays, longer trips.
Smithfield — for design
Smithfield is also north of the Liffey — Jameson Distillery, design quarter, converted-warehouse hotels. Best for: design-focused trips, longer stays, anyone wanting non-tourist Dublin.
What to avoid
- Temple Bar: Tourist-stag-night zone. Loud, overpriced, mid-quality everything.
- Anywhere advertised as "5-min from city centre": Verify on a map — Dublin is bigger than you think.
- Outside the M50: You'll commute. Stay inside the canals.
