Hvar Island is bigger than first-timers think. The pick is mostly Hvar Town's party scene or Stari Grad's calm.
Hvar Town — for the party
Hvar Town is the central Old Town with the harbor — Venetian-era square, dense restaurants, party-island reputation. Best for: under-30 trips, food-and-bar focus, anyone wanting the cliché Hvar.
Stari Grad — for calm
Stari Grad is the older town on the north coast — UNESCO Stari Grad Plain, calmer, fewer tourists. Best for: families, repeat visits, anyone over 35 wanting non-party Hvar.
What to avoid
- Hvar Town near the harbor in summer: Loud bars until 3am.
- Anywhere advertised as "5-min walk to Hvar Town" but actually 30+ min: Hvar Island is bigger than the maps suggest.
- July-August at any Hvar Town hotel without verified A/C: Brutal.
Pakleni Islands
The real swim trip is the Pakleni Islands — short boat ride from Hvar Town. Plan a half-day for them.
Quick pick
Party, food, under 35: Hvar Town. Family, calm, over 35: Stari Grad.
