Iceland accommodation breaks into two questions: where in Reykjavík, and where to base outside it. Here's the honest map.
Reykjavík: 101 (the only sensible base)
101 Reykjavík is the central downtown — Hallgrímskirkja, Harpa concert hall, dense restaurants and bars. Anything outside 101 means taxis to dinner. Best for: any Reykjavík stay.
Don't be tempted by slightly cheaper hotels in 105/107 or in Hafnarfjörður. The Reykjavík trip is dinner-and-walk; you need 101.
Laugardalur — only for families with cars
Laugardalur is the geothermal-pool valley east of central — cheaper, family-friendly with the family park and pool. Best for: family stays of 3+ nights with a rental car.
South Coast bases
- Vík: The classic South Coast base — Reynisfjara black-sand beach 10 min away, Skógafoss 30 min west. Stay 1-2 nights for the South Coast loop.
- Hella / Hvolsvöllur: Slightly closer to Reykjavík, cheaper than Vík.
Golden Circle bases
Most travelers do the Golden Circle as a day-trip from Reykjavík. If staying overnight: Selfoss or Laugarvatn work — central to the loop, cheaper than Reykjavík.
East / North Iceland
Ring Road requires multiple bases — Höfn (east), Egilsstaðir (east-fjords), Akureyri (north). Plan 2 nights minimum at each major stop.
What to avoid
- Hotels marketed as "Reykjavík" 30+ km from town: Verify the address — often Mosfellsbær.
- Anywhere advertised as "Northern Lights view from window": Tour operators chase clear skies; you can't predict from a single fixed location.
- Trying to do Ring Road in less than 7 nights: Brutal. 10-14 nights is the right Ring Road trip.
Strategy
4-5 nights = Reykjavík + South Coast + Golden Circle as day/overnight trips. 7+ nights = Ring Road becomes feasible. Less than 4 nights = stay in Reykjavík and day-trip.
