Where to Stay in Kraków: Stare Miasto, Kazimierz or Podgórze?

By FredolinePublished 2026-05-04Reviewed 2026-05-048 min read

Kraków is small enough that the wrong neighborhood costs you only 15 min of walking. But the trip changes meaningfully between the postcard Old Town and the lived-in Kazimierz.

Stare Miasto — for first-timers

Stare Miasto is the medieval Old Town — Rynek Główny, Wawel Castle 10 min south, the city's most-photographed square. Premium pricing for Poland (€100-€180). Best for: 1-2 night first visits, sights-focused short trips, anyone who wants the postcard at the door.

Kazimierz — for food and bars

Kazimierz is the former Jewish quarter — Plac Nowy, ul. Józefa, ul. Szeroka, the densest restaurants and bar courtyards in Kraków. Best for: 2-3 night stays, food-focused trips, return visitors. The 15-20 min walk to the Old Town is part of the trip.

Podgórze — for value and museums

Podgórze is across the river from Kazimierz — formerly working-class, now Schindler's Factory and MOCAK museums, dramatically cheaper. Best for: museum-focused stays, longer trips, budget-conscious travelers. The walk to Kazimierz is 10 min.

What to avoid

  • Anything advertised as "near the train station": Verify — Kraków's Hauptbahnhof area can be loud and not photogenic.
  • Hotels marketed as "Auschwitz day-trip access": Most central hotels work; this isn't a real differentiator.
  • Anywhere in suburban Nowa Huta: Communist-era; not a real Kraków stay.

Quick pick

First-time short: Stare Miasto. Food and bars: Kazimierz. Museum focus or budget: Podgórze.
