Prague is the European capital where the wrong neighborhood costs the most in tourist crush. Here's the honest map.
Staré Město — the Old Town
Staré Město is the medieval centre — Astronomical Clock, Charles Bridge, Old Town Square. Tourist-dense, restaurant volume but mostly tourist-priced, bar overflow on weekends. Best for: 1-2 nights first visit, sights-focused short trips.
Malá Strana — the castle-side
Malá Strana is across the Charles Bridge — castle-foot, Lennon Wall, the gardens. Quieter than Staré Město, prettier, romantic. Best for: romantic stays, light sleepers, castle-focused itineraries.
Vinohrady — for longer stays
Vinohrady is east of the centre — leafy, residential, walkable to Old Town in 15 min. Real restaurants, real price points, no tourist crush. Best for: 3+ night stays, second visits, families.
Žižkov — for indie-bar Prague
Žižkov is east of Vinohrady — the most pubs per capita in the Czech Republic, the TV tower, indie-and-cheap. Best for: budget-conscious trips, beer-focused stays, anyone wanting the local Prague.
What to avoid
- "Near Hlavní nádraží" (main station): Cheap for a reason — sketchy at night.
- Karlín: The 2002-flood-rebuilt area. New, sterile, far from anything pretty.
- Anything Prague 4-15 marketed as "central": Suburban, you'll commute.
Pick quickly
