Where to Stay in Strasbourg: Grande Île, Petite France or Krutenau?

By FredolinePublished 2026-05-11Reviewed 2026-05-117 min read

Strasbourg's UNESCO core is small. The pick is mostly tourist-density vs lived-in.

Grande Île — for first-timers

Grande Île is the UNESCO island core — cathedral, Place Kléber, half-timbered façades. Premium pricing, especially during Christmas markets. Best for: 1-2 night first visits, sights-focused short trips.

Petite France — for the postcard

Petite France is the southwest corner of Grande Île — canals, half-timbered tanner houses, the most-photographed Strasbourg. Tourist crush mid-day. Best for: romantic stays, photo-focused trips.

Krutenau — for food

Krutenau is east of the Ill — student-and-design quarter, food trucks, dense bar strip. Best for: 3+ night stays, food-focused trips, anyone under 40.

What to avoid

  • Anywhere outside the historic core marketed as "Strasbourg": Verify the postal code (67000 is the centre).
  • Hotels near the German border in Kehl: 30 min by tram; only worth it for a specific reason.

Christmas market timing

Late November through 23 December prices double. Book 6+ months ahead. Best week: 8-15 December (less crowded than the final week).

Quick pick

First-time, sights focus: Grande Île. Photo, romance: Petite France. Food, longer stay: Krutenau.

Compare: Grande Île vs Petite France, Grande Île vs Krutenau.
