Where to Stay in Venice: San Marco, Cannaregio or Dorsoduro?

By FredolinePublished 2026-05-04Reviewed 2026-05-048 min read

Venice is the European city where the wrong neighborhood means you're in the day-tripper crush all day. The locals' Venice exists 5 min away from San Marco. Pick deliberately.

San Marco — only when actually right

San Marco is the central tourist core — basilica, Doge's Palace, Rialto. Premium pricing (€280-€600+). Day-tripper crush 11am-4pm. Best for: 1-night flying-visit sights-only trips. Otherwise pick elsewhere.

Cannaregio — for the local Venice

Cannaregio is north of San Marco — the cicchetti capital (Vino Vero, Al Timon, Fondamenta della Misericordia). Where actual Venetians live. Walk to San Marco in 20-25 min. Best for: any 2+ night stay where dinner matters.

Dorsoduro — for art

Dorsoduro is south across the Accademia bridge — the Accademia, Peggy Guggenheim, Punta della Dogana. Walk to San Marco in 12-15 min. Best for: art-focused trips, families, longer stays.

What to avoid

  • Mestre on the mainland: Cheap for a reason — you commute to actual Venice.
  • Hotels marketed as "5-min from San Marco": Verify on a map — Venice has a thousand bridges.
  • Anything in Castello past Arsenale: Quiet but you'll walk 30+ min to anything.

Quick pick

1-night sights flying visit: San Marco. Any 2+ night dinner-focused stay: Cannaregio. Art-focused: Dorsoduro.

Compare: Cannaregio vs Dorsoduro, San Marco vs Cannaregio, Dorsoduro vs San Marco.
