Baščaršija vs Marijin Dvor
Sarajevo's two obvious bases. Baščaršija is the Ottoman heart — the Sebilj fountain, the bazaar, the call to prayer at sunset. Marijin Dvor is 15-20 min west, mostly Austro-Hungarian and post-war architecture, where the parliament and the National Museum sit. Most travelers want Baščaršija. A few specifically don't.
The Ottoman-era bazaar — mosques, copper-workers, the pigeon-square, the postcard Sarajevo. Concentrated, atmospheric, and surprisingly compact.

First-timer atmosphere
BaščaršijaBaščaršija wins by definition — this is the Sarajevo of every photo, with copper-smiths, ćevapi grills, and the Latin Bridge 5 min east. Marijin Dvor feels like Vienna with worse traffic.
Walkability
BaščaršijaBaščaršija is at the eastern end of Ferhadija, Sarajevo's main pedestrian street. Marijin Dvor is at the western end. From Baščaršija you walk west into the city; from Marijin Dvor you walk east, longer to most things.
Restaurants
BaščaršijaBaščaršija has the highest density of ćevapi houses, traditional pivnica, and the bazaar coffee shops. Marijin Dvor has 4-5 strong picks but no cluster.
Quiet sleep
Marijin DvorMarijin Dvor, by a meaningful margin. Baščaršija has 6am call to prayer, scooter noise, and tour group churn from 8am. Marijin Dvor is residential calm.
Price
TiedBoth are 30-40% cheaper than Western European equivalents. Baščaršija runs €40-€90 for decent product; Marijin Dvor €40-€80. Effectively a wash.
Best for second-time visitors
Marijin DvorMarijin Dvor. The Tunnel Museum and Holiday Inn (Yugoslav-era) sit nearby, the trams to Ilidža start here, and you're closer to the war-history walking routes.
The verdict
Pick Baščaršija if…
Pick Baščaršija if it's your first time, your trip is 1-3 nights, and you want the Ottoman quarter at your door. The noise is the trade-off — light sleepers should go to Marijin Dvor instead.

Pick Marijin Dvor if you've been to Sarajevo before, you want a calmer base, your trip leans war-history (museums, tunnel), or you sleep light. The 15 min walk to the bazaar takes you down Ferhadija, which is the prettiest street in the city.

Baščaršija for the cliché Sarajevo. Marijin Dvor for the calmer, second-time version.
