Where to Stay in Finland

Currency: EURTimezone: Europe/Helsinki🇪🇺 EU memberSchengen area

Helsinki is compact enough that almost any central stay works, but the price gap between Kruununhaka and Kallio is wider than most travelers expect. The picks below sort which is right for which trip.

What Finland is known for

Finland is known for saunas, Nokia, Angry Birds, and being consistently ranked the world's happiest country. The travel draws: Helsinki's design heritage (Marimekko, Iittala, Alvar Aalto), Lapland in winter (Santa Claus Village in Rovaniemi, the Arctic husky-sled trip), and the lake-and-forest summer culture (Finland is 75% forest and 10% lakes).

Helsinki's Kruununhaka and Kluuvi are the central, polished stays. Kallio is the cheaper, hipper, slightly removed alternative — still on the metro, dramatically cheaper for dinner.

When to visit Finland

December-March for winter activities — Northern Lights, husky safaris, Christmas in Lapland, frozen lakes. The midwinter sun barely rises in the far north (polar night around Christmas). June-August for the Midnight Sun, lake culture, and the brief intense Finnish summer. April-May and September-November are the dead months — the snow is gone but the lakes aren't yet warm; the autumn 'ruska' colors in Lapland in September are the exception.
