Where to Stay in Malta

Currency: EURTimezone: Europe/Malta๐Ÿ‡ช๐Ÿ‡บ EU memberSchengen area

Malta is small enough to base anywhere and bus everywhere, but where you sleep changes the trip. Valletta is atmospheric and historical; Sliema and St. Julian's across the bay are resort-coded with better restaurants. Stay in Valletta if you want history; Sliema if you want hotels with pools.

What Malta is known for

Malta is known for being a tiny island nation (316 kmยฒ, half a million people), its Knights of St. John heritage, and the cinematic Game of Thrones / Gladiator filming locations. Less marketed: the prehistoric temples (older than Stonehenge or the Pyramids), the unique Maltese language (Semitic root with Italian/English overlay), and the fact you can drive across the country in 45 minutes.

When to visit Malta

April-June and September-October are Malta's best windows โ€” warm sunshine, swimmable Mediterranean, no peak-summer heat. July-August hits 35ยฐC+ and the beaches and Blue Lagoon fill with day-trippers. November-March is mild (15-18ยฐC daytime) โ€” too cool to swim but perfect for walking the temples and the Three Cities. Carnival in Valletta (February) is colorful and small. Easter brings dramatic processions.
