Where to Stay in Romania

Currency: RONTimezone: Europe/Bucharest🇪🇺 EU memberSchengen area

Romania rewards travelers who skip Bucharest-only itineraries and head north into Transylvania. Brașov and Sibiu are the Saxon-walled cities that look medieval-German more than Eastern European. Cluj is the young, university-town energy. Bucharest itself is rough and rewarding in roughly equal measure.

What Romania is known for

Romania is known for Dracula (Bran Castle), Transylvania, and being one of the cheapest EU members. The country's underrated draws: the painted monasteries of Bucovina, the wooden churches of Maramureș, the Danube Delta (one of Europe's largest wetland reserves), and the Saxon walled towns in Transylvania (Sibiu, Brașov, Sighișoara) that read more like medieval Germany than Eastern Europe.

The only inhabited medieval citadel in Europe. Vlad the Impaler's birthplace. UNESCO-listed.

Europe's largest river delta. Boat trips from Tulcea; 300+ bird species, including pelicans.

Major cities in Romania

Brașov0.3M

Brașov's Saxon old town is one of Transylvania's most photogenic — pastel buildings, a black church, mountains looming overhead. Stay inside Piața Sfatului for maximum atmosphere.

Bucharest1.8M

Bucharest divides between Lipscani (the Old Town, walkable, lively, somewhat seedy) and the wider city which sprawls. Stay in or just adjacent to the Old Town; venturing far makes everything an Uber ride.

When to visit Romania

May-June and September-October are Romania's best months — pleasant temperatures, lush Transylvanian landscapes, Bucharest's outdoor terraces in full swing. July-August is hot and Bran Castle fills with tour groups. Winter (December-March) brings skiing in Poiana Brașov and Sinaia. Christmas markets in Sibiu and Brașov are small but real (December). The Danube Delta works April-October; spring is best for birdwatching.
