Sparkling wine geography
Champagne (France, traditional method, Reims/Épernay), Cava (Spain, traditional method, Penedès), Prosecco (Italy, tank method, Veneto hills), Franciacorta (Italy, traditional method, Lombardy), Sekt (Germany, varies). Each has a base city for cellar tours.
Reims and Épernay (Champagne)
Reims the larger city; Épernay (45km southwest) more cellar-density. Maisons: Veuve Clicquot, Pol Roger, Mumm, Taittinger, Krug, Ruinart, Pommery. Tours €25–60 with 1–3 glass tastings; private appointments at top houses €100+. Day-trip from Paris (45 min by TGV to Reims).
Sant Sadurní d'Anoia (Cava)
30-min drive from Barcelona. Codorníu (1551), Freixenet, Juvé y Camps. Cava made by traditional method (same as Champagne) but at quarter the price. Tours €15–35. Day-trip from Barcelona standard.
Prosecco hills (Conegliano-Valdobbiadene)
UNESCO site, 50km north of Venice. Prosecco Superiore DOCG region. Cantina Garbara, Bisol, Carpenè Malvolti. Hills more scenic than ground-level Champagne; cycling tours possible. Day-trip from Venice (1h drive) or stay in Asolo.
Trento (Trentodoc)
Trento alpine sparkling — Ferrari, Cesarini Sforza. Mountain water and high-altitude grapes. Combined with Dolomites trip.
Franciacorta (Brescia/Lombardy)
Italy's "Champagne" answer — traditional method, top-tier producers (Bellavista, Ca' del Bosco, Berlucchi). Day-trip from Milan (1h) or weekend from Lake Iseo.
Stuttgart and Mosel (Sekt)
German Sekt — Henkell, Söhnlein. Mosel Riesling Sekt distinctive. Less internationally famous but quality climbing.
Strategy
Cellar tours in Champagne 60–90 min; book ahead 2–4 weeks summer. Cava cheaper and more accessible day-trip. Designated driver / public transport — tasting flights 4–6 sips add up. Natural wine for the unfortified counterpart.
