Where to Stay in Hamburg: Sternschanze, St. Pauli or HafenCity?

By FredolinePublished 2026-05-10Reviewed 2026-05-108 min read

Hamburg has three real options that serve very different trips. Pick deliberately.

Sternschanze — for food and creative

Sternschanze is the punk-leftist creative quarter — graffiti, vegan döner, dense food density on Schulterblatt. Best for: 3+ night stays, food-focused trips, anyone under 40.

St. Pauli — for music and Reeperbahn

St. Pauli is the Reeperbahn music quarter — Beatles tour, music venues, FC St. Pauli football. Loud Friday-Saturday until 5am. Best for: music-focused trips, anyone under 35, Reeperbahn-experience priority.

HafenCity — for families and modern

HafenCity is the new harbor district — Elbphilharmonie, modern architecture, polished. Best for: families, design-focused trips, anyone wanting modern Hamburg.

What to avoid

  • Anywhere near Hauptbahnhof: Sketchy after dark, far from anything good.
  • Hotels marketed as "Hamburg" 30+ km out: Verify on a map.
  • St. Pauli with kids on weekends: Inappropriate.

Quick pick

Food and creative: Sternschanze. Music and Reeperbahn: St. Pauli. Families or design: HafenCity.
