Where to Stay in Vienna: District 1, 7 or 2?

By FredolinePublished 2026-04-25Reviewed 2026-04-258 min read

Vienna is the European capital where pricing varies most by district. Here's how to think about the major candidates.

District 1 (Innere Stadt) — for first-timers

Innere Stadt is the imperial core — Stephansdom, Hofburg, the opera. Walking-distance to everything iconic. Premium pricing (€180-€350 for decent hotels). Best for: 1-2 night first visits, sights-focused short trips.

District 7 (Neubau) — for design and food

Neubau is southwest of the Innere Stadt — design quarter, MuseumsQuartier nearby, Spittelberg's narrow lanes. Walkable to District 1 in 10-15 min. Cheaper than central. Best for: 3+ night stays, food-focused trips, design-conscious travelers.

District 2 (Leopoldstadt) — the underused alternative

Leopoldstadt is across the Danube canal — formerly Jewish, now affordable-and-real, with the Prater amusement park. 25-35% cheaper than District 1 for equivalent product. Best for: budget-conscious trips, longer stays, anyone over the District-1 premium.

What to avoid

  • Anywhere outside the Gürtel: Districts 14-23 are suburban; you'll commute to anything good.
  • Hotels marketed as "near Schwechat": Airport area, dead at night.
  • Chain hotels in District 4 not near Karlsplatz: Often dull and unwalkable.

Quick pick

First-time, 1-2 nights, sights focus: District 1. Longer stay, food focus: District 7. Budget or longer stay: District 2.

Compare: Innere Stadt vs Neubau, Innere Stadt vs Leopoldstadt.
